WHAT GUESTS ARE SAYING

". . . a key word would be 'clear,' as in transparent or full of light: Chapman has created a Zen-like urban oasis in the middle of the historic Hawthorne district of SE Portland. Her masterful gardening allows a full spectrum view of the changing seasons, from the comfort of a stylish, compact, yet immaculately spacious abode. Not to mention Chapman herself, whose care, kindness, and savvy will help you feel right at home. You won't want to leave. Short-stay dwelling at its finest. Five stars. . ." - Mathias Warner

"I've been required to live in "extended stay" lodgings many times in the past few years and the Hawthorne Garden Cottage is definitely one of the best. It's unique charm, privacy, and close proximity to the vibrant Hawthorne restaurants, theatres, and shops puts it at the top of the list. With it's light, airy ceilings and view of the garden the cottage is truly a retreat in the city. Viewing the full moon through the skylight while lying in bed, sipping coffee with the sound of the rain falling on the roof, listening to my own music on the iPod dock while looking out at the garden... all favorite memories from my stay at the Hawthorne Garden Cottage." - Jodi Eichelberger, New York

"A great alternative to the hustle and bustle of a city center hotel. The layout is functional and the design is aesthetically pleasing. My favorite is the large picture window looking out over an English garden. A great place to stay!" - Joseph Kern

"Quiet, peaceful, zen are the words that come to mind in describing this cottage which was designed with much consideration. Surrounded by trees and lovely houses it is located in a wonderful neighborhood which feels removed, yet is walking distance to shops and restaurants.... That Susan is most welcoming and gracious only adds to the experience." - Katherine McFadden, Berkeley

"As for our stay we had a wonderful time and found the cottage delightful. Taking our infant son worked great and the space was so well designed that it didn't feel cramped at all. We loved how open, airy and bright the space was and we very much enjoyed staying in the Hawthorne district, so close to all those cute shops and restaurants. We didn't take a lot of baby stuff and tried to keep it simple." - Mary, Miguel and Sebastian Saldin, Seattle, Washington

"The Hawthorne Garden Cottage reflects the charming hospitality of it's owner, Susan. It's nestled in the Hawthorne district in easy walking distance of incredible food, shopping, coffee, and other more delicious beverages. My stay was most enjoyable and the living space invites peaceful reflection, exactly what I needed." - Leslie Camacho, Ellis Lab Inc., Bend, Oregon

"The Hawthorne Cottage is a private cozy retreat in an incredible Portland neighborhood. It's walking distance to Hawthorne and Division, both of which have fun restaurants and shops. I cooked some wonderful meals in its little well-equipped kitchen. I slept like a log in the bed and enjoyed looking at the garden from the huge picture window. I hope to return some day when it's warm and I can sit in the garden. The cottage is set back from a very quiet street. It gets lots of natural light during the day and has great lighting at night. It's a perfect Portland home away from home." - Susan Kushnick, New York

"Thank you so much for the hospitality- what a great cottage, just beautiful inside and out. Much preferred this to staying in a hotel, made us feel like true "Portlanders" for the week. Thanks again." - Kim and Philip Allgeier, Louisville, Kentucky

"Thanks for a great place to stay. We loved the neighborhood!" - Aubrey and Felix

"Thank you so much for your hospitality. Staying at the cottage was so much better than staying at a hotel. The kitchen was stocked with all the essentials (and more). If we come back to Portland again we will definitely be back!" - Lindsay and Patrick, New York

"Amazing location, terrific accommodation! Our four days here was the highlight of our trip. Thanks so much." - Bob and Michaela, Vancouver, BC

"Thank you for a lovely stay. I know I'll be back and I'll be calling you guys! P.S. You have a huge raccoon that comes through about 9:30. Looks just like the ones in MS! :)" - Leigh

"Thank you for a much needed getaway for my wife and I. We loved the cottage and can't wait to come back. Thank you for your hospitality and flexibility in getting us in on short notice. Thanks a bunch!" - Ryan and Bethany Suess, Washington

"I had an awesome experience at the Hawthorne Garden Cottage! The owner, Susan, was very friendly and accommodating and her taste in decoration and landscaping made for a very tranquil retreat during my recent conference. The cottage is open, airy, and bright with a lovely picture window overlooking the garden. And the price still has me floored – it was considerably less than any of the hotels and yet was an exponentially better experience. I highly recommend it as an alternative to the bland sameness of hotels if you’re in Portland. Thanks again for the great stay!" - Ian Durham, Manchester, NH

"Dear Susan, John and I have enjoyed our stay in the cottage, we felt very relaxed here. Thank you so much." - Karen and John, UK visitors

"Thank you so much for such a lovely stay! Beautiful cottage with all the comforts of home. We had a fabulous time relaxing and enjoying the city. Thank you so much for your hospitality!" - Jake and Michelle Shupe

"We loved the cottage, loved the neighborhood, had a great time in the city, and the little dog was hilarious! Thank you." - Dan and Marilyn, UK

"We always like to stay in a residence when we travel as opposed to a hotel so we can soak up the local flavor of the city. Susan's guest house gave us a truly authentic taste of Portland and more! Amazing location in the heart of the Hawthorne district, contemporary yet homey surroundings, a meticulously maintained, spectacular garden and the occasional run-in with her adorable dog (which really helps when missing your own four-leggeds). If you're looking for a comfy oasis in the middle of Portland, look no further. Thanks, Susan!!" - Libbie and Lindsay

"Dear Susan, I've so enjoyed my stay in your lovely cottage. Everything is set up for guests to feel at home as soon as we step in. The location is terrific - within walking distance of everything important (bagels & books). Thank you so much - I'll be back! :)" - Kassandra

"Thank you, Susan, for sharing your lovely cottage with us. You were so warm and welcoming and nothing was too much trouble. We appreciated all the handy tips such as the fabulous "New Seasons" supermarket on Division and 19th. We also loved the "Little T" Bakery nearby on Division and the cafes and restaurants around Clinton St. We loved exploring Portland - the streetscapes are beautiful, the people friendly, and the public transportation superb. Our trip to the Columbia River Gorge and Mt. Hood was a real highlight. Thank you again Susan, for your kind hospitality and the delicious Rhubarb pie!" - Sally and Alan, Melbourne, Australia

"Susan, We enjoyed our stay - the cottage is just right, the gardens are lovely and tranquil, the neighborhood is convenient and fun to wander through." - Mary and Scott

"Susan, Enjoyed our stay, cozy and clean, loved the decor - fit our artists studio. Will recommend to friends from Chicago and the environs. We had a couple of visits from your friendly dog every time she smells a waft from our cooking. We love her - she reminds us of the one we left behind who answers to the name "Parker". Thank you for your hospitality." - Lorne Franz
